I'm 70 and did not know Burns & Allen had a TV show for 8 years (1950-1958). After seeing these episodes on Antenna TV, I just had to read more about Burns & Allen. Up until then, I only remember the initial 1950 episodes on TV and their earlier radio shows. Consequently, I purchased this book. I am in awe of George Burns recounting of this story about his life with Grace Allen. It's a love story, it's historic, and it's funny and in the end sad. Mr. Burns goes back to the early 1900s vaudeville, when there was no radio or TV. He was determined to have an act in show business even if (as he explains in the book) one of his partners was a dog off the street. This book describes his fortitude and love of entertaining and sharp sense of humor. Once he met Grace Allen, he describes her as a beautiful Irish colleen with black hair and beautiful peach-white complexion with a bird-like voice. She was the straight man at first, with Mr. Burns delivering the funny lines. However, when Grace Allen gave her straight lines to George, she got all the laughs. He was smart enough to turn the page and make himself the straight man. So it began. Not sure if it was love at first sight but there was a connection between them. This book describes their connection, talent, love of each other and family and the enormous gift they both had along with an endearing love and respect for each other. George Burns never bridled her talent; he just let her genius roam free. Then of course there was the ending of her life and the sadness. There were times I laughed so hard I lost my breath, especially during the stories about his friendship with Jack Benny. Do yourself a favor and read this book, get it at the library or buy it or kindle it, but read it. To me it's an interesting and important journey about two very special people.
By far one of the most entertaining books I’ve ever read! I read one review that said you could picture George Burns telling this story while smoking a cigar and boy is that the truth! It really is like he’s telling the story of his life with Gracie Allen right to you.... I will definitely read this again someday! Absolutely LOVED IT!!
Of all the books that George Burns wrote during his life, this has got the be the best ever. Whereas his first book, "I Love Her, That's Why" was about his own life and Gracie thrown in at the midpoint, this book is pretty much all about Gracie. Written 33 years after the first book, 24 years after Gracie's death and 14 years after the death of his best friend Jack Benny, it's a retrospective of a life full of happiness with family and friends and how much he missed them after all of them had died. Written when George was 92 (how many of us would be writing a book at the age of 92?), he lets it all hang out, even his and Gracie's uneasiness around Benny's wife, Mary Livingston. The last chapter of the book talks about the last few years of the Burns and Allen TV show, and how much Gracie didn't really want to act anymore but did, anyway, because of her dedication to George. He's clearly repentant that he forced her to continue her career through 1958, but admits that he wasn't as aware of her feelings as he should have been...it was all due to him and his business sense, not to mention the public couldn't get enough of Gracie, that their show lasted so long. The end of the book will bring a tear to even the staunchest of stoics (SPOILER ALERT Gracie dies!), but in his own inimitable style George treats it with the dignity of a man who truly loved his wife. Hence, the title of his book.

In 1964, she died of a heart attack. He continued performing, producing and writing books until he died at age 100.
